Cockroaches are stubborn, they spread, and they are almost always brought in rather than grown at home. The good news is that a fresh introduction is usually still small. The bad news is that it will not go away on its own.

First we work out which species you have
This is not pedantry. The four species we see in the Netherlands live differently, and treating the wrong one wastes your money.
German cockroach
Small, light brown, two dark stripes behind the head. Lives warm and close to food: kitchens, behind appliances, in restaurants. The most common and the fastest breeding.
Oriental cockroach
Dark, almost black, slow moving. Prefers cool and damp: cellars, crawl spaces, drains, communal basements.
Brown-banded cockroach
Small, with lighter bands across the body. Spreads through the whole property and sits high up, not only in the kitchen.
American cockroach
Large and reddish brown. Usually linked to drains, sewers and warm technical rooms.

If you live in a flat, read this first
In an apartment building cockroaches travel between homes through service ducts, drain stacks and suspended ceilings. That means this is never one household’s problem. Treating your flat while the neighbours do nothing gives you the same picture back within weeks.
The right move is to involve the VvE, the Dutch owners association, or the property manager, so the surrounding flats and the shared ducts are inspected as well. If you rent, tell your landlord straight away. We can invoice a VvE or a manager directly.
How they usually arrive
With a move. In second-hand appliances, especially fridges and microwaves. In cardboard from a warehouse. With deliveries into a restaurant kitchen. Occasionally through the drain from a neighbouring property.
Almost never because someone is untidy. We say that because people are often embarrassed to call, and the delay is what turns a small problem into an expensive one.
What to do before we arrive
- Do not spray a supermarket product around. With German cockroaches it scatters them into other rooms and makes the job harder.
- If you can, catch one in a jar or photograph it. Identification is half the work.
- Store food in sealed containers and clear crumbs from behind and under appliances.
- Note where and when you see them. Kitchen at night is a different story from bathroom during the day.
Questions
How many visits does it take?
Usually more than one. Eggs are protected inside their case and survive the first treatment, so a follow-up is normal rather than a sign something went wrong.
Do I have to leave my home?
Normally no. We will tell you exactly which rooms to stay out of and for how long.
Will you tell my landlord or the neighbours?
Only with your permission. In a shared building we would strongly advise it, because otherwise it comes back.
Do you work for restaurants and food businesses?
Yes, and outside service hours. We work with a baseline inspection, proofing and a digital logbook for inspections and audits. Request a quote.
