How we work

1. Inspection. We look for droppings, gnaw marks, grease trails and sound. Then we go where you have probably not been: the crawl space, behind the kitchen units, around the meter cupboard and along the outside of the house.

2. Proofing. We close what they use. This is the part that actually ends the problem, and it is the part cheap providers skip.

3. Control. Only where it is needed, and poison-free wherever we can. We follow IPM-K, the Dutch integrated pest management standard.

4. Advice. What to change so it does not happen again. Usually something simple about storage, waste or a door.

Why Dutch houses are good for mice

If you have moved here from somewhere with concrete slab foundations, this will be new to you.

Most Dutch homes sit above a shallow crawl space, a damp void where the water, gas and electricity pipes run. Mice move through it freely and come up into the house through the openings around those pipes, usually near the meter cupboard or behind the kitchen. That is why the place where you hear them at night is rarely the place where they get in.

In older city housing, especially in Amsterdam, Haarlem and Weesp, buildings share walls and floors. Mice then travel by building block rather than by address, and treating one flat while the neighbours do nothing achieves very little.

In new-build areas the cause is usually outside: a development site next door, or fields nearby. After the harvest, roughly between September and November, field mice lose their cover and move into the first warm building they find.

What you can do today

• Put dry food, pet food and birdseed in sealed containers, not in cardboard or plastic bags.
• Check the door between the garage and the house. If daylight shows underneath, so does a mouse.
• Do not feed birds right next to the house during autumn and winter.
• Keep boxes off the floor and away from walls, especially in a storage room.

Questions

Do you use poison?

We avoid it. We work according to IPM-K, which means proofing and hygiene come first and chemicals are a last resort. If you have children, pets or a vegetable garden, say so and we will take it into account.

Is it a mouse or a rat?

Droppings tell you. Mouse droppings are the size of a grain of rice; rat droppings are closer to an olive stone. Send us a photo on WhatsApp if you are unsure.

Could it be a wood mouse instead of a house mouse?

Near woodland and green edges, often yes. A wood mouse is a seasonal visitor that usually leaves once the opening is closed. A house mouse stays and breeds. It changes the approach, and it saves you money if we establish which it is first.

I rent. Who pays?

In the Netherlands structural causes are often the landlord’s responsibility. We can invoice the landlord or the property manager directly.
